AI this - AI that. From image generators like Midjourney or Dall-E to language models like ChatGPT. AI is the new hyped kid on the block. One use-case we might all be happy about seeing is AI being integrated into our workflows when culling. This dull, time-consuming task can bring you to tears when you would ever count every hour you spend doing this in your carrier.
Did you ever count the hours you browsing and selecting images spent during your carrier? Do you want to speed up this task and live the life you always dreamed of? (*TV Commercial Voice implied*)
Say no more - AI got you covered!
AI can now help you go through your photographs and allow you to quickly browse and rate the best shots, all while checking for focus, closed eyes, and duplicates for you. With the latest update to Capture One 23, we saw the new Culling Tool be embedded into the software. This feature helps group the images to specific scenarios and therefore helps choose the best shot. To make your life even easier, you might want to take a look at ‚Narrative Select 'or ‚Aftershoot'. Those AI-Based culling tools help you cull images even more efficiently.
Of the two, we prefer 'Narrative Select'. This tool will group your shots and label images that show people with closed eyes or images that are out of focus/blurred. A little symbol indicates whether you are good to select (green) or should keep browsing (red). Very handy is the extra feature displaying a 100% zoom on every face in the image so you can double-check for yourself. There is even a score rating for what image might be the best to pick. (An Art Director unapproved feature yet though!)Â The final selection can then be transferred to Capture One or Lightroom with a few clicks to continue managing and grading your shots in your preferred software.
AI-powered features are becoming increasingly popular, as they can save a tremendous amount of time and effort. They are likely to be integrated to Capture One and Lightroom at some point as well. Until then, one might give Aftershoot or Narrative Select a try to save some time sorting through images after wrap lying in your hotel bed. Â Best part - the free version allows full functionality for up to 4 projects per calendar month.
